You can learn to be an empath by looking at other people’s situations and imagining what it would feel like if you were them. Initially, this imagination may let you experience a portion of their experience. With practice, you will be able to empathize with their whole life leading up to this moment in order to better understand how they really feel.
If you are starting from scratch, it helps to first try to empathize with people who are nothing like you. For example, if you are a vegetarian and you want to understand a person who eats meat, you might start with empathizing with an animal that wants to eat its prey because it is in their nature. Then, you could imagine being trained in that same way from early childhood if you were a human. You may finally conclude that instead of judging someone for eating meat, you can empathize with them because it may feel natural to them.
When empathizing, you do not want to put the other person’s negative energy on yourself. This is a common mistake made by the majority of empaths. When someone feels any energy too vividly, that energy attaches itself to them. To avoid this, see it from the perspective of someone else that you know or like. In the example above, it was from the perspective of the animal. If you truly do not like anyone, then you will have difficulty empathizing. You have to be able to like people to a certain degree in order to be able to empathize. A true empath knows that when you really know anyone to their core, they are easy to love. They became the way they are through lessons that required them to have certain experiences including unfavorable ones. With wisdom comes the knowledge that having love for someone does not mean you have to like them or want their present energy around you, as they are being guided home in a path that is right for them.
Try on my shoes,
see if they fit,
peek at my world,
using your gifts. How would you act
if you were me?
If we switched lives
how would life be?To truly care,
break apathy,
feeling concern,
trust empathy.– Mytika
